July 14 - Day 5

The boat docked uneventfully and we enjoyed watching it navigate into the very tight quarters it has at the Malta port. Malta is a very interesting island. A little over half a million people live here and this island has had a very strategic military role throughout history due to it’s positioning in the sea.  Matt and I got up early and showered and got breakfast. We were ready to get off the boat as soon as they let us - about 7:45 am. I wanted to get an Uber right away and head to Mdina but Matt thought it would be better to hike up to the upper city. Unfortunately, we did that and the Uber was almost twice as expensive as if we just hailed it from the boat. I think it was because the demand was increasing by the minutes. In any case, we eventually were able to figure out the Uber thing and rode to Mdina where we will start our day. Mdina is a the original city of Malta and is very old. We walked through the labyrinth of very narrow alleys. It was interesting. Not much is open ...

July 13 - Day 4

Matt had trouble sleeping again. Woke up at 4 and then he turned on the TV at 6 am, so sleep was over for me too.   He got up and showered. I can’t face it yet but we both headed to the dining room to get breakfast. I wasn’t crazy about my breakfast. It was just ok. Food last night wasn’t as good as the food on the Alaska cruise either. Hoping this is just a blip. But it is ok. Just food.   After breakfast, we went to a line dancing class. It was hard! I would not have had a chance to keep up except for the classes we have taken at home. We signed up for Pickleball today but it is not going to happen. It is so windy. There is no way to play. So instead, we headed to the Gym to try and get some exercise. The Gym is packed!! Matt decided to head back to the room to do some exercises but I stayed and got about 30 minutes on the Elliptical and did some mobility work.  My body feels pretty devoid of energy. I finally got showered. I wanted to blog but it is really tough. I bou...

July 12 - Day 3

We were both awake about 6 am but then fell back to sleep for a bit. Matt said he was awake a couple hours in the night but I slept quite well with only a little awake time. We got up and had an espresso in the room, provided by the AirBnB, showered, packed up and left our bags at reception.  We headed out to explore downtown Barcelona. The streets were quiet on a Sunday morning and few shops are open yet. We walked over to Sagrada Familia and then on to Hospital de Sant Pau. The buildings are beautiful. We stopped for me to have a latte and Matt of course, bought nothing. I shared a little with him. This guy has such a need to never spend money. It is odd at times but I try and just let him be who he is. We continued to walk through the city, exploring and stopping at major landmarks. We saw the Torre Glories, the weirdest skyscraper, 38 stories tall and looks completely out of place in Barcelona. We also saw the Arc de Triomf, a beautiful brick arch built as the main access gate ...

July 10 and 11 - Day 1 and 2

As always, getting ready for an international trip is daunting but this one was especially so since we will be gone for over three weeks. Spent a lot of time thinking through what we will need and getting my supplements and other regimens together took some serious planning. Met with the doctor the day before we left, who at the last minute could not see me, and I met with the NP instead. I was able to procure an Ativan Rx which is essential for jet lag on the other side. Of course, I don’t reveal that I am sharing this with Matt.  But the time did come and we were as ready as we will ever be. We took the bus to Fruitvale BART and then BART to SFO. We were there in plenty of time and used the lounge for lunch. Everything was uneventful and we boarded the plane on time, although they did make us check our bags, which always annoys me. The flight went fine until we realized about eight hours in that the pilot had changed course and the map display at our seat was telling us our desti...
