July 16 - Day 7

We got up early and got showered. Headed up for some breakfast on the Lido Deck. We were all ready to go when the ship gangway opened.

Off the boat we went with our itinerary for the day in hand. Our first job was to get a taxi to take us to the Venizelos Tombs. That set us back 25 Euros but we were determined not to delay due to heat. It was beautiful at the top of the mountain. Very quiet and serene. The view of the area was panoramic. We walked around a bit and then headed down toward Koum Kapi Beach. The walk took us about an hour or so but it was lovely walking through the neighborhoods. When we arrived at the beach, the beauty was incredible. The Sea is so lovely. We walked a bit further and found the Arched Shipyards from the 16th century and the rugged sea wall that led out to the lighthouse. We walked along the sea wall all the way out to the point where the lighthouse sits. What an incredible area. The beautiful water and the backdrop of the colored houses is stunning.

We walked up to the Old Town and found a bank to get some Euros. I am ready to stop for a minute. Pretty sure Matt never needs to stop. Ever. We found a cute little roadside cafe and got an iced caramel latte and some bruschetta. So so good.

I’m feeling like I’m fueled up. We headed out to the Firka Fortress which is on the other side of the water where the lighthouse sits. Hiked to the top and enjoyed more spectacular views. Bought an orange shirt for Matt along the way. It is orange night tonight on the boat and he forgot his shirt at home! I told him he needs a wife. I think I’m going to start filling in for that role even though it is not official.

Headed on to the Nea Chora Beach, about another mile down the road. It is getting really really hot. Wow. When we arrived at the beach, I wanted to go in! There were wall to wall people and we realized we didn’t dare leave our stuff. Matt stayed with the valuables and I changed into my suit and went in. The water was just lovely. Just lovely. I tried to get Matt to take a turn but he refused. So I stayed in longer. Loved every second.

Headed out and started the challenge of figuring out how to get back into my clothes with no towel. Finally managed with a minimum of sand.

Headed back to the Old Town and Matt figured out where we needed to catch the shuttle to go back to the boat. Matt bought tickets and we decided to explore a bit more before heading back. I’m completely out of gas and feel like I can barely move. We stopped and got a traditional cheese and spinach pie. We wanted to get a kalitsounia, the traditional savory pie, but they were out of them. We got a close second. I’m feeling a little better.

Got on the shuttle with a million other people and started the trek back to the boat. They greeted us again with cold water and cold washclothes. The boat makes you feel like royalty.

I dove immediately into the shower. I feel so gross. Got dressed in our orange garb and headed to the dining room. Took pictures with our orange gear. Not sure what we will do with those or if I’ll buy them. I know Matt won’t! Sat with another couple a little older than us and chatted about travel, hiking and life.

I’ve been getting sugar free desserts every night. They are amazingly good. I don’t feel cheated at all.

We chatted too long to go to the 7:30 show and we don’t plan to stay up for the 9:00 show. It will be another early morning tomorrow. Santorini! It will be interesting to see if it is like I remember.
